Let’s recap the run of Alabama’s season so far. We’ve destroyed USC, shut down an award-winning quarterback, and gotten revenge on Ole Miss. Our next opponents are… Kent State.
Betting markets have us as overwhelming favorites. Why wouldn’t they? This Alabama team actually looks better than last season’s National Champions. Solid run game, good receivers, Jalen Hurts is clearly a significant upgrade from Jake Coker, and the defense is still as incredible as ever!
The Kent State Golden Flashes? Well, let’s just say they were blown out of their first game. Quarterback Mylik Mitchell hasn’t had a 200-yard game this season. Running back Justin Rankin has yet to break 100 on the ground in a single day. Field goal kicking’s iffy, too.
So they’re weak offensively. What about defense? Well, they allowed 30+ points in their first two games. Then, shockingly, they held an admittingly underwhelming Monmouth University to 7 and unlike some huge wins by arguably bad teams, the stats reflected this. Could this be interesting?
If we were talking about Georgia Tech or NC State, yes, but the answer is still no. Alabama has yet to score under 38. Even if Kent State has figured it out on defense and Monmouth wasn’t a fluke, I think they need 35 to beat this team. Again, there’s nothing to suggest that they can score even 20 on a school like Alabama. And frankly, even that is giving Kent State a lot of extra credit.
Anyway, I’m predicting that this game will be about as exciting as playing an old video game with cheat codes. While it’s great to win, it’s somehow not all it could be without the possibility of losing. Kentucky the week after is even more of a mismatch. Our next interesting game will be against Arkansas. ROLL TIDE!!!
