As I previewed Alabama’s meeting with USC, I said, “Alabama shouldn’t sleepwalk through this.”
It wasn’t all sunshine and roses for Bama. USC quarterback Max Browne burned us with a 36-yarder to our 33. But the stout Tide allowed very little more to concede only a field goal.
Blake Barnett was the first of our three quarterback candidates to play. After two brief possessions, a nightmare scenario of us constantly going three and out and getting our defense exhausted emerged.
On the field marched Jalen Hurts, my first choice all along, I might add. So for his first play he… fumbled the ball away to finish the first quarter down 3-0.
That wouldn’t last long.
Hurts made some big plays, particularly a catapult into the end zone, to score 10 unanswered. USC responded with a pick 6 for the first half to finish 17-3 Alabama. We rode the momentum through the second in a 35-3 outscoring job. Despite some rookie mistakes, Hurts would score four touchdowns total (two passing, two rushing), while USC’s offensive line was pierced all night by Jonathan Allen and our secondary neutralized star receiver Juju Smith-Schuster.
If there’s one negative I can take from this game it’s that Hurts, assuming he’s the guy like the announcers seemed to see as likely, needs to clean up his mistakes. We’ve got Ole Miss in two weeks and they won’t let us get away with that.
But all said, good week for Alabama. Glorious if not quite perfect win, LSU and Auburn lost so if Florida State wins tomorrow night, we’ll be overpowering favorites to win the West. ROLL TIDE!!!
